As we all know, 2020 was a year in which most of us had to change our plans and adapt to this new and strange reality. However, some positive things have come out of this.
Me and my partner love travelling and have done many trips together. He is very much about racking up countries (last count I was beating him, but I think he may have overtaken me now). I am fascinated by Eastern Europe and the fomer Soviet Block so often look to go there, he is a sun seeker and loves anything over 30C, which I struggle with. We had booked to fly to Sofia (Bulgaria) and back from Thessaloniki (Greece) at Easter, which would have been a great compromise. That trip will sadly have to wait.
We did manage a great little trip to Scotland in August. This is somewhere we’d wanted to go, but in all honesty probably wouldn’t have booked had it not been for the travel restrictions. We found cheap direct flights to Inverness from Bristol, and hired a car at Bristol Airport for a few days in the Highlands and Skye.
Below are some of my photos from our trip. I can’t remember where all of them were taken – at one point we were stopping the car to take photos every time we turned a corner because of the new breathtaking views. We were incredibly lucky with the weather – no rain in the five days we were there. I think we had 23C one day. That just left us the mist and the midges to contend with, but it was more beautiful than I could have imagined. I can’t reccommend a trip highly enough to anyone.
Through the Highlands and over to Skye
The photos were taken with my grandmother’s Minoltina P camera which I inherited and has been on lots of journeys with me. It’s small enough to carry in your squeeze into hand luggage and carry around with you in your handbag all day.
I’m just a hobby photographer and probably a bit of a romantic, but to me (despite the impracticalities) nothing beats the colours and slightly grainy feel of photos taken on film.
